French Drain Cost Factors

An outside French drain installation job requires a few supplies and a great deal of digging. The following factors must be considered when pricing out a French drain.

Cost Factors

  • Linear Distance – The cost of a French drain depends on how long the drain has to be. The size of the perimeter of your home and the distance to a drainage area will all go into determining how many linear feet are needed.

  • Landscaping – When installing a French drain, you will need to dig a trench several feet deep depending on how deep your foundation is, and 1.5-2.5 feet wide around the exterior of your home. This means you will have to factor in the cost of replacing any items such as gardens, fences, sidewalks, landscaping features, driveways, or plants, in addition to new grass seed to cover the area once it’s filled back in again.

  • Obstructions Around the Foundation – If you have a foundation that has multiple large wells around the basement egress windows, you will need to go around these or plan on methods that will keep them dry, all of which will increase the cost.

Installation Factors

A basic French drain installation can be completed in a single day by a team of professional landscapers, so long as there are no complications. If you hire a trencher and do the job yourself, you can expect to lose at least one weekend. The cost to install a French drain also relies on the amount of labor that is involved. You must take these factors into consideration when it comes to determining the overall cost:

  • Length and Depth of the Drain – The more you need to dig, the more time it takes, and the more you will have to spend on labor. If you are going down the DIY route, consider hiring a trencher to save hours of time on labor.

  • Obstructions – If you have patios, gardens, sidewalks, decks, or any other obstructions, the cost of installation increases. This type of project is less expensive when you have a clear path and no obstructions.
